Did federal elans have 2 brake servos?

PostPost by: FOX5D » Wed May 04, 2011 8:53 pm

Hi everyone

I have been trawling through the historic threads on dual circuit braking, and apologies to anyone who has already made this evident, but did the dual circuit braling federal elans have 2 brake servos?

My Federal Elan built in Dec. 1969 has no servo either. I have wondered if any Federal Elans had servos. Maybe not.

Some Federal S/E's did come equipped with servos. They usually failed within 5 or 6 years and the owner would discover how expensive and difficult they were to remove and rebuild. Most owners rebuilt once or twice, then removed. A few owners did not like the additional pedal effort and installed a smaller master.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

My 70 (built dec 69) came with two servos. Long ago disconected. Oops! I thought question was in +2 section.

Spoke to the guy at Classicar Automotive today and he reckons that some federal Elans had a 0.7" diam tandem mc with two 2:1 servos (5/8" diam) in the boot. Have you guys over the water heard of that?

I'm asking all this because I want to convert my Elans (S3 & S4) from single circuit with Lockheed servos to dual circuit with servo assistance, and I want to get a setup that works.

I like having the servo because it just feels right in this day and age, and I don't mind the aggro and expense of fitting the second one if that brings me the right end result.
I also spoke to Paul Matty's today and they sold an Ian Walker prepared Elan fairly recently which had 2 servos.

Hi Bill

Yeah but you're not as arthritic as me so I like my servos. And i want my stickers on front and back for good balance please.

Which side of your Caterham mc do the pipes come out from?

Cheers

my federal 67 S3 had a single channel, single servo,
now rusted away and removed,
a dual channel no-servo now in place.

Try Seltech Engineering Prod Ltd 23 cross st., Leamington Spa, Warwickshire 01926-428967

They represent Lockheed (AP/Delphi) boosters. They assisted me with adding twin boosters to my TVR Vixen.

If servos were fitted to a Federal Elan there would have be two. The servos had to have been the remote type so one is needed for each of the front and rear brakes otherwise the front/rear balance would be wrong. Other than that I really don't know which Federal Elan versions would have had boosted brakes.

From the pushrod end, (driver's perspective) the left side.
