Upgrading brakes on a S4

PostPost by: Petter Hval » Tue Jul 29, 2008 8:43 pm

I have a set of Ford Cortina calipers on the shelf - Girling
type 16, 2" piston bore with the # 64326673 and # 64326672
and the distance between the bolt holes on the lugs is aprox.
82.3mm . Can these calipers be fitted to the S4 with the +2
mounting plates and where do I get the plates?
Regards
Petter

Girling 16P callipers were used on the +2 so they may be the same as the Cortina items you have.

You are right you will need +2 calliper brackets, try the usual suspects for these. You will also need +2 sized front disks and possibly different flexible brake lines.

One note of caution here. There are 2-flavors of the 16P(B) calipers. The earlier version uses I believe 1/8-inch retaining pins and has standard hydralic fittings and retention bolts. The later calipers use larger retaining pins, metric fittings for the brake line, and metric retention bolts. They do make special retension bolts for the later variant, which has standard threads, but a metric shaft. I believe Moss Motors and the Roadster Factory can supply these special bolts. Like the +2, the Triumph GT6(+) and possibly other TR's of the time, were subject to this change.

Hello Petter

Ford spec calipers don't always fit because they have different mounting centers.
