Front Wishbones

PostPost by: Chris-72-Sprint » Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:54 pm

Is there anywhere that sells replacement front wishbones ?

I think someone told me TTR do some but are they straight replacements

My current wishbones look a bit thin and I would rather fit new ones whilst I have the body off.

Thanks
Chris

Thanks Doug

My car is a 72 Sprint with a good spyder replacement chassis (circa 1984).

Are you saying I can buy a set of front and rear wishbones from spyder that will be direct replacements for my existing originals ?

It yes that seems a good solution

many thanks

Hi
I?ve recently received the new parts list from Mick Miller?s,
They are now selling original pattern front wishbones. Uppers ?36, Lowers ?40 + VAT.

Chris,

My car is also fitted with an early Spyder chassis which is still in excellent condition. I have Spyder front wishbones and standard Lotus rears.

I have to say that both the chassis and wishbones are much stronger than Lotus originals

The Spyder wishbones are solid tube and not open channel as in the Lotus design.

The Spyder front wishbones are well worth fitting, but don't be tempted to buy them with standard bushes fitted. Poly bushes, although more expensive, are better and don't require setting-up as they work in a different manner.

Well that's your "crumple zone" gone then?.......

Thanks for all your replies

I am just down the road from Sue Miller so will have a look at her front wishbones.

Will definitely fit polybushes all round whichever solution I go for

John,

That's a good point worth considering. If you're in a minor shunt, would you rather the wishbones deform or the chassis/inner pickups deform?

I understood the chassis suspension pins were the first to deform.

Where are your wishbones worn?

My S2 has the original wishbones and I have replaced bushes and ball joints but the wishbones themselves don't seem to have any wearing parts.

Is there something I should be looking at?

Peter

There are 2 areas of wear on front wishbones in the UK, both due to rust - the metal gets thinner and the other is elongation of some of the bolt holes because the pivot pins seize, again due to rust.

Of course, in Australia, you don't put that much salt on the roads in the winter so rust is less of a problem!!!

Peter,

Lotusfan is dead right - in my case the wishbones are getting thin from rust - which weakens them. The holes are ok but they look like they may have been "strengthened" in the past.

I did discuss Polybushes with Andy at Spyder when I bought Spyder wishbones last year and he recommended sticking with the standard bushes - I can't remember why but took his advice! James - it might be worth discussing wuth one of the guys at Spyder before you order.
