Elan big brake conversion

PostPost by: mr.vman » Tue Jan 23, 2007 12:15 am

Does any one have infromation on using, toyota 4 wheel drive, front brake calipers from early eighties pick up trucks, on the front of Elans? As I have heard, it is pretty much a bolt on. I also have heard/read that the brake increase is huge. What type caliper is used? What about bolts? Do the Elan brackets need modifications? Does the master cylinder need to be changed? Any real world experience with this conversion. On a search the VTR (Vintage triumph registery) used to have a link but no more. Thanks for the information. By the way, I am in the "states".
Thanks, Steve V.

Found this, may be the article you're looking for. I've no idea if the brake mountings will the same between TR6 and GT6/Spitfire

http://www.vtr.org/maintain/brake-conversion.shtml

Looked here for parts comparison:

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/

part No25 on the TR6 looks the same as GT6/Spit part - different part Nos tho' and GT6 is available but TR not

Good luck, interesting idea to uprate an Elan, let us know if you're successful.

Why would you want a "huge" increase? You cannot overcome the laws of physics and every Elan that I have ever driven is more than capable of locking it's wheels. I can understand increasing the size of the front discs and calipers on a +0 Elan, but the +2 seems just about perfectly balanced.

Cheers,
Pete.
