Personally I like to have a flat washer under any nut, nyloc or plain even if it's a thin one and just acting as a smooth surface for the nut to turn on rather than as a load spreader. But as to whether ommision is inviting failure ahead I have no real idea.
It does bring to mind a quote I read in a book about Chapman. He was checking the mechanics working on one of his race cars and said "why are you letting those washers take a ride on my car ?"
(or something like that !)

Yes I was cringing a bit when I had to tighten the bolt against my shiny new dust shields rather than the washer but there was no distortion fortunately.

I contacted Steve at SJS, he said that the 2.25" bolt should fit with one washer under the nut but it would not be a problem without.
I would like to fit washers for the reasons mentioned above so he is sending me 2.5" bolts
