I prefer the HSB but here in Brittany i'll make do with an Abbaye Vauclair.

The Morris 1000 had a similar design in as much as the trunnions are threaded, but grease is the recommended lubricant. In my youth I had a Morris1000 and looked after 4 more for friends and family, we only had one failure (my dads first van, very second hand) getting grease into the trunnions was very difficult but once achieved, one pump from a grease gun every two weeks kept everything moving smoothly.
On the subject of oil or grease, perhaps Triumph had seen the problems Morris had with grease and reasoned that oil was more likely to reach the far extremities of the threaded trunnions.

Well, if you make it the Sussex I'll cook you local butchers sausages and wash them down with lashings of proper beer.

If you drink German beer and you are in Worms, you can go to the “Oktoberfest” and have a “Maß” together with a “Haxe”. I've already done that once. It's a bit too far away for me at the moment. About the same distance as from Worms.

Finally got it all back together after an extended hiatus for work, temporarily reverting back to being a rockstar and a bout of the lurgy.
Just got to ponce about with the brake bleeding and I should be back on the road. Just in time for the winter salt
Thanks to all for the input and thanks again to Leslie for sorting out the vertical link.
As for the bodged one, does anyone want it to have a go at a repair? The threads look pretty good to me and it seems a shame to bin it - I am keeping the trunnion as a spare though.
Any takers let me know, if not I'll scrap it.

Back again,
I've been under the car bleeding the brakes again today and I noticed that one of the bolts that secures the steering arm to the vertical link hasn't gone far enough through the nylock nut (it has barely reached the nylon insert).
I bought new bolts for the job from SJ Sportscars - https://www.sjsportscars.com/parts-and-accessories/SJ687.htm - pic below, and I am thinking I may have got the bolts/washers in the wrong places. I have put the 3/8 spring washer under the head of the bolt that goes into the tapped hole in the steering arm and I am left with 4 of 3/8 plain washers which I assumed went either side of the long bolt with the nylock on (one under the bolt head to bear against the brake disk dirt shield, the other under the nylock). I am wondering if I have too many washers or if the bolt is too short...
Can anyone tell me the sequence please?
Robbie

I'd put the spring washers as you have done but only use a single washer under the nyloc bolt. This image is from the Europa manual but the same principles and it's clearer than the one I have for the Elan.
As you've noted, the important thing is that the nyloc part covers the threads. If removing a single washer doesn't do that, I'd either look for thinner washers or longer bolts.

Thanks Brian,
Yes, the Plus 2 manual and the parts list doesn't show any washers for the bolt, which I assumed were an omission on behalf of the illustrator. Perhaps not!

I have pulled it apart again and checked the bolt, it is shorter than the old one. I've had to remove the washers to enable the bolt to go all the way through the nylock. It is secure now but I don't know how necessary the flat washers are..?
