Engineering may seem dull and boring, but when things go wrong people can be hurt or killed. I spent most of my working life in the chemical industry, the company had its own standards and national standards, some of which are legally enforceable, we were expected to work to whichever standard was the higher. I had the grand title of “responsible engineer” which meant that if a structure collapsed, a machine flew apart, lifting equipment failed,or a pressure system burst, I was the person who would go to court. Certainly concentrated my mind.
