Spitfire steering rack

PostPost by: ChrisD » Fri Apr 08, 2022 11:00 pm

Hello all,

have the same problem.
I built a lhd 26r clone.
I have:
1 original elan lhd ateering rack with worn rack.
1 Spitfire lhd steering rack with bent rack.
1 new quick rack vrom limora, they say it fits the elan.

Conclusion:
Elan rack is 1.5 cm shorter than spit rack and limora quick rack. (See picture)
So I think elan rack comes from herald?
Using Spit rack changes steering geometry and especially beloved bump steer of course
The offered quick rack cant't be taken apart for using original steering spacers.
You have to make homestyle spacers, no problem.
Replacement quick rack fits generally but it does not provide the original elan geometry.

If anyone offers a good original elan rack...please p.m.

Regards Christian

Chris

I believe the rack length should be 660mm you may have a TR rack which is 650mm

my belief is tha Elan and Elan+2 were both 660mm

I coiuld be wrong about the Elan But a +2 is 660mm

And the +2 has the spacer between the outer and inner.

To my knowledge, the early (S1/2) Spitfire racks are identical, except for the spacers. My recent refurbishment of the well battered oe rack was €200 plus taxes, so new rack is not an option moneywise ( and keeping it original wise…)

Some of the new racks ive bought are junk. You may be better off just replacing that bushing on pass. Side. Its about 5 bucks
