Might be worth checking out Kiley-Clinton Engineering Ltd. They remanufacture classic car racks and also supply rack and pinion kits so they may have all the bits you will need.

About 6 years ago I bought a rack from Rimmer hoping to fit it to my S4 correctly assuming that the only thing it needed was the travel limiting spacer fitting.
The rack was nicely made, in Poland I think (nothing wrong with that) but like a lot of modern car suspension components is designed as a non-serviceable, throw away item!
Unlike the original the ball joints were integral with the rack bar. The bar ends are not threaded and end caps are swaged in place into a groove in the bar.
I have not seen the current Rimmer item but even if its as I described above it would still be usable if the travel limiters were in two halves so could be installed without dismantling. Two 'C' shaped parts could be held together with Spiralok type retaining rings.
