What size is the steering wheel nut?

I am trying to sort out the thread size for my '69 Federal +2, as the threads are bunged up and I have to clean up both the shaft and the nut.
Little bigger than 1/2" ( 17/32"? 9/16"? Metric?) and I think it's 28 tpi, though somehow the thread gauge does not seem to fit quite perfectly (but that could be my ancient eyes).
Anyone?

For the benefit of the future poor soul searching this thread for an answer:
My '69 Federal +2 steering wheel nut thread size is 9/16-28.
Had to wait for my Hong Kong tap & die, but all is well now.
