Damper comparisons?

PostPost by: Lotus54 » Sat Nov 11, 2023 8:44 pm

I did some searching, but did not find anything.

I see several options for front and rear dampers. I am sure this could be very subjective, but what are the pros/cons of the options out there? For street use, not racing or track.

I have used Koni and Spax in the past, but I’ve never had an Elan so that would have been on other models.
Thanks for any input.

Hello
I put some of Tony Thomson adjustables (UK) on front and rear to my elan sprint for around £500 Not sure on the carriage to US though but from other posts on parts from them they are very quick on delivery'
You can set up the ride height and damping to get what's rt for your driving.
I am very pleased with the set up.Good luck.

Hi
Don't know if this is going to help you but FWIW as part of a recent rebuild on my (road use only) +2 I replaced all shock absorbers.
They didn't really need it but for the rears in particular it seemed sensible to do while the car was all in bits. I bought just the standard item both ends. I cant be sure but my impression is that the rears are softer than those previously fitted to the car. I queried this with the supplier (SJ sportscars) and they said that their product had exactly the same spec as the original Lotus items. With 20:20 hind sight I would have fitted adjustable shocks and then I could have tweaked them to meet my expectations . I suppose the point of all this is to say I'd recommend buying adjustable shocks . I know there are those that will say adjustable shocks just give the owner the means of screwing up the settings carefully reached by Lotus but today we are all buying aftermarket items and I'm not sure how well they match the original
All the best

Thanks for the replies.

I think RD sells ttr suspension components.
I am just researching at the moment (have not even picked up the car yet)- but I am assuming it will need all replaced to be right.

Thanks

Hi Baggy
Before I changed my dampers and springs to ttr all my shocks were spax adjustable on the front very old with Paul mattey i inch lower springs on the rear only 2 years old but I noticed it was very low on the rear and with no adjustment I was catching the exhaust quite often. I also remember the car taking a while to work on the rears. I decided as I was doing a complete bush change I would put some adjustable spring platforms and 2/1/4 rear springs on. This has made a big difference as the height of the rear is now as I want it .No more leaving half my exhaust on the road. The car handles well and can be adjusted to what settings I want . If your a reasonably handy fitting the spring platforms is a simple job of grinding off the original platform and welding on the new unit to the strut.it’s an easy job to fit back in as the springs do not need to be compressed. You can also fit a wider wheel with these if you like but I have kept the original wheels with 155x13 tyres . It handles nice now

All in all a good choice for me
Hope this helps
