Rear Hub Fitment

Hello All,

I am in the process of fitting new rear wheel bearings (and doughnuts and diff output shaft seal/bearing) and I need to ask if what I'm seeing is normal on the rear hub. I have tightened the rear hub onto the spindle and there is a ~2mm gap between the outer bearing and the hub, is this normal? I would have expected the hub to go closer to the bearing. If the hub does not butt up against the bearing then the only thing keeping the hub/shaft/bearings from moving inboard under cornering is the circlip (and bearing fit) of the inner bearing, is this correct?

I guess the hub can't go hard up against the outer bearing as it is on a taper and small tolerance variation can alter its position?

What you are seeing is normal. As you assume, the gap is there because of the taper and will vary a bit based on machining tolerances.
