Front wishbone bushes

Morning all, having purchased a fitted a set of poly bushes to the front wishbones on my 1970 S4 12 years ago, I’m only now getting round to commissioning the car (along with a long list of other jobs that comes with a car being stood for so long) I think that the crush tubes are too short in that there is little or no protrusion from either end of the bush.
Am I correct in thinking there should be some protrusion to allow the tube to be held tightly and for the polyurethane to rotate around it.
It seems as if the bush is binding preventing the suspension from moving freely.
Could anyone also confirm what is the original length of the inner tube on the metal / rubber bushes fitted from new?
Many thanks
Simmo.
