Brake servo question

PostPost by: Andiken » Wed Feb 03, 2021 11:13 am

Good morning all.

I'm coming to the point in my restoration of my '73 Plus 2 of resolving the brake servo. The car came with a Girling unit but I'm sort of settled on swapping for a Lockheed type as I fitted one to my MGB V8 30 odd years ago and haven't had a problem with it in all this time (I still have the car). If I go down the Lockheed route what ratio should I be looking for for the Plus 2?

Mine is 3, but I guess you can make it whatever you want if you know what you are doing 8) I am pretty sure 3 is standard. I did read somewhere in the archives though someone took theirs over 4.

I've removed 3 servos from Elans over the years. Never understood why Lotus thought such light cars needed a servo in the first place, even on a +2. I run an E-type Jaguar (2500#) with no servo, but in that case needed to increase the mechanical pedal ratio and change the MC bore to get adequate force and feel. As a young man I owned several GM muscle cars that came from the factory with no servo. Not saying their brakes were good, btw, as they were terrible, but it wasn't the lack of servo that made them so.

I deleted my servos and switched from the 7/8" Girling to the .7" Girling and it works great. The feel is a little numb, but this seems to be more noticeable at low speed and I still can easily lock the wheels if I want to.

3:1 is standard , I uprated it , for a day only , was like a switch , ON/OFF , went back to the 3:1..

Colin wasn't stupid , greedy maybe , but not stupid...
