Front brake rotor is just single nut?

Hello gentlemen – newbie question caught without a manual here. The front rotors on a 1969 are removed by simply undoing the single recessed nut, correct?

I'll raise your four nuts to four nuts and two bolts!

(The caliper has to come off)

Oops!

I see the caliper is already off, I can also see the ends of the bolts holding the disk to the hub, access to the four heads is by removing the one castellated nut.

Yes, the spindle nut. Should have a cotter pin holding it on, which can be hard to see amid the grease. Long nose pliers come in very handy here.

Got it out - it was only finger tight which is consistent with dormant overhaul status I bought it in.

The nut should not be real tight, as it adjusts the wheel bearing preload. See your manual for proper tightening procedures.

I Love the vague responses to a specific question that in itself needed clarification.

The original question was to remove the rotor. yes you first need to remove the hub and rotor assembly by removing the nut on the spindle assembly and pull the hub of the spindle and its bearings. Then if your really talking about the brake rotor specifically you then need to remove the 4 bolts that hold the rotor to the hub. This of course requires removal of the caliper first and the photo showed this had already been done.

It helps if people think about the question being asked as well as the answers they give to ensure they are precise and fully explanatory otherwise this becomes just like all the other internet car forums .... full of Sh*t.. which fortunately it has so far avoided.

Humour in response is good .... but humour that just confuses the answer without addressing the serious question is excessive IMHO.

And Yes I had a hard day at work with lots of of people with lots of opinions but no real knowledge trying to tell me what should be done :evil: ---- they will learn eventually not to "poke the bear" as a very respected engineering colleague of mine says to me to try to calm me down :lol:

Hope today is a less frustrating day. I am very appreciative of everyone’s patience as I am learning here as I have never had an Elan before and this car, while a good one, needs everything.

This forum has allowed me to make very good progress on saving the car, and for that I am thankful.

Rohan, is probably right (he usually is :-) ) but personally I didn't have any idea at all what tdskip was talking about. It took several to-and-fro postings before it was clear that he meant the main hub retaining nut. Taken in conjunction with the title "Front brake rotor is just single nut?" it is not at all surprising that the answers he first got, related to the brake disk rather than the hub.

I’m staggered that you having worked on TR4a cars you didn’t instantly recognize the front axle, brake set up as it’s almost identical to the Elan.

Tell you what guys - I’m going to leave the Elan off the road for now and work on other cars for a while.

Apparently a new owner who is motivated to save the car and cooperatively contribute to keeping forum active is proving to be a problem.

As an FYI - the TR and MG and even the Porsche guys would all be happy to educate an eager newbie without the need for commentary, just saying....
