Hi all, going forward with the resto on my plus 2 . I have found that due to being stood in a guys garage for years the newly fitted servo unit locks the brakes on when applied. Thought it was the master cylinder but brakes bleed fine have so ruled that out. Must be the servo. It's all four brakes so I have ruled out a flexy hose as well. Question, any way of getting inside these things to find out what is sticking? Can't be much as the thing was and looks new, but as I said been stood for years.

If its an original Girling servo instructions can be found with the following:
Type 'Girling mk2 servo rebuild' into Google then scroll down to a site for Volvo 1800 servo rebuild. The download is a good description of strip down & rebuild,

Go to page 2, ?Fault Finding? and ?Brakes Hanging on? Then check out Test 5.
This test will sort out if the fault is in the Servo unit or not.
If it?s in the Servo, then as the car has been stood for some years, it?s possible that a seal has swollen or just stuck in position, stopping the Control piston from operating.
Other items to check are the Non return valve on the unit or on the Cylinder head inlet manifold.

Many thanks guys, will have a go and see what we find. Everything on the car is standard and was sorted by the previous owner who sadly is no longer with us. Servo is standard Girling unit and looks to have been refurbished so is probably just sticking as mentioned. Will check all of the various valves. When the brakes are stuck on and a bleed nipple is released the brakes return to off. We'll see how we go.

There's a small valve at the end of the master cylinder piston which may be stuck shut. Its function is to seal the system when applying the brakes, and allowing the fluid to escape back into the reservoir when the pedal is released. It's worth checking. :
