Modified steel wheels--keep or dump?

PostPost by: Davidb » Sun Mar 24, 2019 7:41 pm

The original steel wheels for my S2 were modified for racing in the sixties-widened and plate reinforced. They are 5 1/2 or six inches wide. I just noticed one of them has a couple of cracks in it. They are quite heavy.
I have fitted 26R hubs to my car with Revolution peg drive wheels so I have no use for these old steel wheels. Would anybody like them or do I send them to the dump?

Yeah, that's what I thought--it isn't as though they ran at LeMans or anything...

If you're not in a rush, you may offer them here for the cost of shipping : maybe someone would like to make a workshop wall clock or something else of them...

David,

Where are the cracks? I don't have a car with bolt on wheels, but thought they were rare and valuable. Just a thought, someone might need them.

Here is a photo of the one cracked wheel--one crack is at about 11.00 and and the other is 180 degrees opposite and runs circumferentially .

Both cracks are in the outer "lotus" part of the wheel-the reinforcing section behind would still make the wheel safe I think. I suspect that the cracks occurred before the reinforcing was done. Those are the only two cracks-the other marks are not cracks.

I sold a set of original steel wheels without the hubcap mounting pegs. The new owner had to have the pegs made up from scratch at a high cost. At least you have the wheels w/ pegs, so I would say there is some value. Let the buyer beware, so long as you make it clear the issues you have found and are selling them with. Good luck!

OK! Anybody in the Pacific North West want a set of steel wheels widened to ~6 inches and reinforced?

I was always told that the first rule of classic car ownership is ?never throw anything away?

Keep them or gift them
