Pedal box. Is this right?

PostPost by: djb222 » Thu Oct 04, 2018 4:07 pm

As part of the refurb of my S4 today I decided to dismantle the pedal box in order to rub it down before repainting. The accelerator pedal came away, fine, but although there was a washer and split pin apparently retaining the brake pedal it was welded to the main pedal shaft....now that seems correct, but the weld is rubbish , and why the split pin.
Should the clutch pedal be able to be removed?

After another look.........

I cannot see how it can possibly be dismantled. The brake pedal is welded to the shaft. The shaft then passes through a tube which is part of the support bracket. at the left hand side of the shaft is a pivot bar which allows the brake to be operated. the clutch pedal moves on the shaft freely but is captive between the brake and support. It cannot be dismantled any further. It looks factory, I can see why it was designed this way but why the split pin?!!!!!

I have had a look at mine. Although difficult to see when in the car it also seems to be welded. If it then it is a very neat job.
Maybe the split pin just prevents the washer binding on the weld taper.
While you are there you can increase the pedal spacing easily by bending the pedals. I moved the brake pedal half an inch left and the clutch pedal 1" left.
The pedals bend quite easily with a bench vice and a hammer.
It now means that I can drive with ordinary shoes on. The only disadvantage is that I can no longer slide the left foot past the pedal to rest on the floor. I have to pull back and go under. To me this is well worth it for the ease of use obtained.
I covered this in a thread on here titled PEDAL SPACING. The search box at the top should find it.

Thanks Eric. I think someone may have tried to alter the spacing, as although tight the spacing seemed ok when I have driven it.

Hi,
I have done mine - sometime a go but it wasn't a hard job.
Measure the lateral clearance.
Using a centre pop mark the brake cylinder lever and shaft position then carefully remove the weld with a file.
when it is all apart change the bushes - I might still have some of these, I remember buying more than I needed. Anyway should readily available.
Before welding back together you will need to fit shim - can be paper as temporary spacer for lateral clearance
Weld back together.

When refitting back in to the car you will need to take time to realign and make square to bulkhead.

Regarding the split pin if I remember correctly it has a washer so forms the lateral location for the accelerator pedal otherwise the accelerator pedal would bind on the weld.

Regards
Steve
