The borgeson u-joints are excellent replacements for the rag joint. But buy a new one from Bean or one of the other suppliers. I have seen some removed with bodged splines, or the pinch bolt was over tightened. This is a safety critical component. Don't skimp.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

I bought one from a Triumph supplier to replace the Lotus part as the steering mechanism on the Elan is all Triumph. ?20. Had to torque up the bolts quite a bit to get it to grip the steering shaft and rack input shaft but it works well and not a hint of play at the steering wheel. A good investment, and as a side benefit there is no need to fit an earthing strap around it as it is conductive.
The one in your picture looks to be cast but mine is pressed steel. This one in fact:

I'm very pleased with it.

Grandma sucking eggs time..
"Had to torque up the bolts quite a bit to get it to grip " why?
You did fit the bolts to line up with the channel in the grooves?

The Lotus part was the same. A bit loose, resulting in play in the column. I couldn't get it tight enough, probably because the clamps are cast items, or due to lack of access under the radiator. Might have some spline wear to compensate for. Anyway, this being a pressed part, it seemed happy to be wound up tight enough to grip both splined ends.
In addition, it helped with the steering column alignment. When I first pulled the lower column out of the original joint, it sprang up as it had been under tension. No longer, because the replacement is a bit longer and a proper U/J and I've adjusted the column itself with spacers.
Yes, it's been apart since. Thank you CoppaSlip!
@Mark: Yes, correctly located. Especially the lower column shaft, which only fits one way thanks to its D shaped cross section. Learned that the hard way!
