Knock on direction

PostPost by: Concrete-crusher » Sat May 16, 2015 5:29 pm

Hi I,m hoping an experienced eye might help me out.

I have now taken the elan out for two short test runs , on both occasions the rear drivers side wheel has come loose.

After the first time I really tightend it with a bolster hammer and block so i,m amassed in just over a mile its loose again.

Have I got my knock on spinners the wrong way round? , the manual refers to left and right side of the car but it depends which way your facing.

Here's a picture of the wheel , it's the rear drivers side , and it's a uk car.

Looks correct
The top of the spinner needs to move towards the front of the car to tighten, to the rear to undo.

I use a 2 foot long bar and jump on the end to tighten my wheel nuts (hex nader nuts rather than eared)

You may have a problem as the DPO may have over tightened the spinners causing the hubs to deform and now the spinners are bottoming on the threads...

P.S. The way to check is to remove the hub and mark the studs and spinner and count the number of rotations till it bottoms, then refit the hub and do the same...

Did you mean remove the WHEEL?

As removing the hub is a rather long job.

Thanks for the replies , it reassuring I,ve not got them round the wrong way. It's funny how the simpilst things can catch me out. So I have decided to buy one of the central tightening tools and a new torque wrench , it seems like a good enough reason to add to the garage tool set , and just hitting these things with a lump hammer is not a great idea.

So more scientific what should the torque be.

Looking in the technical data page 27 refers to 160-180 lbs ft. But that's for octagonal wheel nuts , I can see anything for spinners.

Also interested in this, as yesterday I developed a similar issue!

Steve, purely out of curiosity, do your balance weights HAVE to be visible on the rim? Mine are hidden away on the inner sider.

Regards

Andy
Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?

The wheel/tyre combination should be dynamically balanced. To achieve this may require balance weights on both the inside and outside of the rim.

For the same thread, it doesn't matter whether it's a knock-on/off or hex nut. The torque is the same. I believe the octagonal nuts were developed for the USA market to meet safety regulations and that the hubs are the same meaning they have the same thread. I may be corrected by someone who knows more about the detail.

Check the Peg holes are the correct size too, my +2 wheel kept coming loose and on closer inspection the peg holes where elongated.

swop wheels, right Wheel to left side and left Wheel to right side.
You will know if the Wheel is the problem if the opposite side becomes loose
