Steel Wheel Paint Code

PostPost by: Ianashdown57 » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:38 pm

I've just sent my Steel Wheels to the blast shop to be cleaned up and was going to have them powdercoated but I'm having trouble finding a powdercoat that is close to the correct color. I'm now thinking I should have them painted instead. Can anyone let me know the correct silver color code for the wheels (and bumpers) that I can find here in the US?

Thanks,

Ian

If all else fails, you might try Olympic Powder Coating in San Marcos. They have a great selection of silver colors and do wheels for a friends restoration shop.

+1 concerning Olympic Coating. Top notch work.
Ian, hope they are using beads and not a course media.

Ian,
I suggest, just in case you haven't already, that you check them for trueness before painting; speaking from experience unfortunately, I was surprised how far out mine were when spun on the balancer (after painting)
Also noted the steel was quite soft / weak.
Ended up buying minilites.

Ian

I restored my S1 in 1996, I used the stock Mercedes silver for both the steel wheels and the bumpers.

The colour is as close as damned is to swearing - and I didn't have to melt down part of my hoard to do it.

True and balance them up first.

Hello Ian

The silver for the bumpers should be:- Ford Silver Fox, ICI paint code D513B

I do not know if the silver used on the wheels was to the same code

I?m having my Elan steel wheels trued and the dents/scraps taken out as well as repainted. The shop that is doing these does all the straightening and repairs, media blasts them, powder coats for primer first and then paints to your specific color and then clear coat. When I asked to paint match a specific color of silver they brought me two entire books of silver colors. It was mind boggling to match. One of the shop guys comes out with another swatch book, flips through it and says, this is the silver color from Mercedes that all the European cars use. Who was I to argue, plus it was damn close to what I wanted anyway.
