Koni rear shock horror! Advice please

Dismantling my rear suspension and removing Koni shock inserts. The first one came out without a problem but the second one unscrewed and came out dripping oil and leaving the outer Koni casing down the housing - beyond the thread at the top of the housing!
Any clever ideas on how to extract the offending item? The inside of the casing is very shiny and oily so I'm not sure how to get hold of it to pull out.

Get yourself down to the next carboot/autojumble,or if you're flush with cash an engineers supply merchant, and purchase a large tap (doesn't matter what thread but if it's left hand it helps) of approx the correct diameter and use it as an "easy-out".....
