Greasing UJs Problem

PostPost by: david.g.chapman » Sat Mar 11, 2006 6:51 pm

Spring is almost here, and it's time to give the +2 a service. All went well, until I tried to inject grease into the rear UJ on the propshaft, using the built in grease nipple.

I can see grease coming out of two of the joint seals, but nothing from the other two. After several tries and many strokes of the grease gun. the situation was the same. Heating the area with a hot air gun did not help.

I have tried to look under the joint seals but cannot see anything much. There are no nasty rust marks though, and there is no play in the joint as a whole.

Any tips?

Dave Chapman.

Dave
Chill out, you've done your best and there is no point worrying about a problem that may not exist.
It's a sod of a job to take these apart if there is no need to.If later on in its life you hear knocking from the prop. then replace the u/j.
Till then just put it to the back of your mind

Get out there and give it some....

Thanks John,

I was'nt too worried about it - the angle those UJs have to work through means they last for donkeys years anyway. But.....

I did try some more with the hot air gun a bit closer to the inner cross assembly. This contains the grease channel which may have become blocked with hardened grease. Once grease pressure is relieved by grease flowing out of one of the seals, it becomes harder to shift the rest.

Eventually grease made it to the other two bearings - don't ask me how much grease I used!

Hi Dave, sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I have the same issue on my UJs. So do you think the heat gun trick is the way to go ?
