Air box issue

PostPost by: Bud5000 » Wed Jan 10, 2024 5:58 am

I think the air box I have may not be correct for a Lotus?
It doesn't match anything I can see in the parts or workshop manual.
It doesn't have a round snout where the ducting would fit and it's far too flat at the front. It almost looks like the snout has been cut off.
Back plate fits fine onto the Weber carbs.
The top cover has clips rather than bolts to hold it on.

Can anyone enlighten me to what it is and if it's correct?

I don't know what its off, but it don't look Elan.
It appears to be heavily fabricated. The original backplate was pressed and the cover fibreglass moulded
The back plate seems crudely made and too deep and the cover seems to be just a rough bent sheet of metal.
I think it will cause you more problems than it might solve.

It's a bit of a bodge, definitely nothing that Lotus ever made....
If I were you, I'd find a good S/H original, they do come up on Ebay from time to time, but they realise good money.

You often see new ones for sale on eBay without the tapering cross section, ie better than original. I think they're about £85.
Hmm, just noticed you're in NZ so shipping may be pricy!
