air filter

Following a change of radiator position on the S3, I have very little space for the air filter housing in the snout.
I want to fit air filters directly onto the Webers and supply them with air via the large duct that remains in place.
I would like your advice on buying air filters and your experience.

Having tried KN's fitted to the carbs, I would recommend retaining the airbox and trunking, and finding a good filter to fit inside the trunking at the nose end. Several filter companies do cone types that will fit onto or inside of the trunking if you're strapped for space. The OE airbox I think is much more efficient at getting cool air into the inlet, and certainly quieter.

Hi Geni,
I agree with Elans 3.
I didn`t like the noise from the Webers with filters on the intake trumpets, although others do like it.
I fitted a cone filter on the front of the air duct which I think would fit in your situation.

Hi Geni,
I agree with the other two responses regarding sticking with the air box and trunking. I used a K&N cone filter under the right headlight, but my lights are smaller H4's and they are fixed so there is a lot more room without the pods and lift mechanism.
I'm not sure what you have going on there, but I'd do everything I could to use the air box and trunking.

I have used K&N's RE-0810 filter, located in the nose just behind and under the RH headlamp. I had to make a bracket to locate it, but that wasn't too difficult. Search previous threads for "RE-0810", as a few others have used the same filter.

I use this in the GTS: Air Filter ITG JC60/99C. I think the large airbox and cold air feed at the front is the best solution.
On the S4 I have an over intake pipercross. It is functional but I'm suspect likely to be less efficient.

I used this base plate from Merlin Motorsport
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/itg-base-plate-for-dcoe-100mm-centres-lotus-elan-itg-14jc40
The centerline of the bores is angled to provide clearance at the back above the pedals so you don't get the hammering on the fibre glass above the pedals that you do with K&Ns. I cut a hole in it for the breather.
ITG do a couple of filters to fit this base plate. You have to have a bonnet with the bulge in though.
As I went from Strombergs to Dellortos via a head change I no air box to start with.
I like the sound of induction roar.
