Stromberg carburettor choke/cold start device

Having just bought an S4 SE Elan, I was surprised that the car would start without using the choke. Also, I had noticed that the car was running rich. When I bought the car, I thought that the mixture needed adjusting, but if course, the Strombergs have a "fixed" main jet. Removed the carbs, checked the needles and main jet heights, all correct. Further investigation revealed that the Cold Start "discs" had been fitted 180' out of place. Re-assembled and refitted the carbs, mixture is now correct, and choke is needed to start the car. Unfortunately, the choke cable is only attached to the front carb, so I'll see how well it works before connecting the rear carb Cold Start device.
This is all "just for information", hopefully it will help someone

My late 72 build +2S130/5 has the two Strombergs with only the choke on the front carb and I’m not sure what the crossover point was but it has the adjustable needles so I guess yours is just before that, Gordon

Even the 'non-adjustable' needles are actually adjustable to a very small degree, just not as precisely. If you loosen the lock-screw on the needle you can move it up or down a hair or so.
