BWT, the compression was reasonable and quite even between cylinders , but we did not write them down.

Right, that is progress, you are losing water.
That is so similar to mine.
I have had the head skimmed as it was showing some pitting and corrosion.
Two lotus people looked at it beforehand and thought that although not good, it was not the cause of water loss. The cylinder head specialist said it probably was the cause.
Three people, including Rohan on here, told me the water pump can leak into the oil.
The engine has not been idle for long periods in the 10 years of my ownership and the pump bearings feel good.
So I have it stripped down now and am waiting for new parts and learning. I have not been in this area before so I am reading a lot including Brian Buckland`s engine supplement.
This topic is in my thread -mayonnaise in the cam cover- where I will report on my results in due course.

It's unusual to have a leaking head gasket and for the cylinder compression to still be good and even. The water leakage may be a due to a cylinder head crack behind the valve area and into a coolant passage. A crack in that area would not affect cylinder compressions but would allow coolant to enter the combustion chamber. I doubt you have a crack in the cylinder wall. That would affect cylinder pressures and cylinder walls are virtually unknown to crack unless the cylinder has previously been bored out excessively. Whilst the engine is standing I'd suggest you drain the coolant, remove the spark plugs and pour a bit of oil down each cylinder. Rotate the engine a turn or two afterwards to distribute the oil. If there's water in the cylinders it's surprising how quickly they will rust.
