THROTTLE CABLE CROSS OVER

PostPost by: gearbox » Sat Sep 03, 2016 10:19 pm

Finished rebuilding my pedal box and pulled out my old throttle cable and noticed the end was badly frayed and cutting it down would make it just short of what I needed. Being that it was a long weekend, my usual vendors were going to be closed, I took a shot at my local bike store. Seems that the "Campy" brake cable looked the right shape for the pedal side and since I was using Strombergs, all I needed was an open end for the other side. The head was a bit larger than the original Lotus cable, but I thought a jeweler's file would remedy that fairly quickly. But the cable was a perfect fit as it was. The shoulder under the head was just the right diameter and slipped in the throttle pedal bar, and the head could be filed down a bit, but works as it. The cable would not slip out and sits inside the pedal bar as securely as the original Lotus cable. So I figure I would pass this on if anyone else finds themselves in a pinch. Plus the cable costed me only10 bucks and slides into the original cable housing like it was made for it. Not a bad quick fix on a long weekend lol.

Love it. Thanks for sharing.

I've been figuring on using motorcycle or bicycle cables to replace all my old cables. Nothing like having a bonnet or boot lid release cable break on you  Or a throttle cable

Yes, my bike cable has been working the Strombergs for 25 years plus without incident.

I buy tandem bicycle rear brake cables, and bulk housing with additional ferrules. Also use the curved aluminum tube for Z brakes to route the cable over to the carbs on a LHD car. And yes, a little filing on the end of the cable make things work together nicely.

Rob, "Z brake"? I'm not following . . .

Am looking for a way to put the boot release cable and sheath into a rigid tube as it passes through the top of the rear wheel well.

Thanks,

Randy

Mountain bike brake parts before the went all hydraulic. Old tech now, but a good bike shop may still have some stashed away.
