Stromberg carburettor with KN filters

I've seen some pics in posts about the Stromberg carburettor with KN filters.
I would like make the same modification on my Elan S4 1968, but the front filter is too high and boot-lid doesn't close at all.

The only way I see to fix this problem is the lowering of the engine with special mountings, but it's a big and complicated job.
Before to take this way, I would ask if anybody made any modification to install the two KN-filters without put upside-down the engine-mounting

I have not done what you are considering, have thought about it in the past but decided against it for

1. the reason you identified - doesn't fit without major work
2. feeds the engine with warm air from the back side of the radiator instead of cold air from in front of the radiator as the stock system supplies.

I'd keep i the way it is with the intake up front.

I am also considering pancake filters because my engine runs on 3 cylinders when cold and I would like to experiment if pancake filters would solve this issue. running a Stromberg engine and maybe the rear carbs do not get as much air as the front carbs fitted with the original airbox??

Robin, your diagnosis is way off, I'm afraid. If you're running on 3, and No. 4 is missing, it's possibly due to excess oil from the breather fouling the plug. A pancake filter will apparently fix it, because you'll have nowhere to attach the breather pipe! What plugs are you using?

Paulo, I have a pair of Smith's pancake filters that are much smaller and were once on a Stromberg-carbed Elan. Maybe you can find a couple of these?

The breather tube from the head connects to the factory airbox next to #4's intake, it takes most, if not all of the blow by.
