Unusual Air-Box Cover

PostPost by: Fredtech » Mon Feb 23, 2015 8:21 am

Guys. Sorting thru a selection of items that need to be moved out my garage, I came across this
rather unusual Airbox Cover. As you may remember, the early "Oval" Airbox Covers were single bolt thru the centre. Later Weber/Dell Airbox covers are "Square-End" and have 3 bolts into the Airbox plate.

This one is "Square-End" with a single, center bolt mount.

Can anyone identify what this will fit ?..... Thanks.

From the slight rather than sharp downward angle of the intake tube it would appear to be Plus 2 rather than Elan (or possibly Europa but no idea what they look like).

As Elanfan says it's a +2 airbox. The early ones only had the one bolt and the later ones had three.

Guys, thanks for identifying this for me.

I'll post it for sale as a +2. Cheers.

There was a generation of 2 bolt air boxes for Elans around 1968 - 69 I would have thought Plus 2's would have had two bolt air boxes around this time also?

Were they for Strombergs Rohan? My early Plus 2 cars had the single bolt, and the later ones had the three bolt, but not seen a two bolt, at least on the Weber / Dellorto setup.

The two bolt cover was on my 68 Elan with Webers. I always assumed Plus 2 of the same period would have two bolt covers also as i would have thought they used a common back plate but i have never specifically looked to see if that was the case.

cheers
Rohan.

The front airbox on my 67 S3 SE has two bolts to secure it but the backplate has provision for a three bolts.

The back plate is probably a replacement one. The three bolt back plates were made when lotus moved to three bolt air boxes around 1969 /1970? but the bolt spacings were such that it also suited the earlier 2 bolt airboxes.

The Mk 2 Lotus Cortinas had the three bolt backplates from Jan '67 !

But my Elan S3 S/E, from Jun '67, has the earlier curved front backplate with single bolt.

Blimey there are a lot of variations!
