Fuel Injection

Hi all
I think I have worked out where I am going wrong with the plugs (thanks to Rohan) and will try a set of BP6ES but that doesn't sort the advance problems that I am suffering from nor the fact that I have spent the best part of last year tinkering with the webers to achieve a reliable set up that allows me to town drive and blast in the same journey.
What I want is to drive the car without having to tinker after each journey so I am considering ditching my carbs and going for injection.
Is anyone else running an injection set up?
I am thinking of using an Emerald system and feedback would be interesting.
Also, how does one fit the trigger wheel to the crank pulley accurately? i am using a tooth belt drive and am not sure how best to do this. (the QED part is a v belt only and rather expensive for what it is).
Thanks in anticipation
Gavin

As you are in Herts, you could go ask Malcolm Ricketts (and Mike Loughlin) (http://rickettsracing.com/)
he has a superb white Elan fitted with fuel injection.
You missed your chance to see it last Wednesday

Excellent article on Engine Management Systems here:
http://www.enginelogics.com/engine-management-basics/
With the last quarter or so dealing with conversion of older engines to use Fuel Injection etc.

Gavin,
Missed this first time round.
I have an Emerald with Jenveys on my Elan and it works really well. The link that Bill posted up has some very good info in.
I mounted the trigger wheel to a standard QED pulley using a spigot bush between them with a longer bolt to hold it all on. I also dowelled it together so that it could be removed and replaced without then need to set it up again.
As I have said in another post the outcome is only as good as the person who does the mapping so if you use an Emerald ecu I would get them to map it. Not the cheapest but very good.
Cheers
John

Yeah, I'm just realising that I shouldn't have let a scrap yard have my old Ford Fiesta XR2i after I blew the cam belt 100 miles from home, back in 2006.
It probably had most of the necessary bits on that car to do a Fuel Injection conversion and distributor removal conversion of a Twink.
And I never even got the ?40 they promised me.

I took all the its off my old Mondeo ready to transplant onto the Plus2,couldn't use the injectors/manifold but have used the crank sensor/MAF/coilpack/temp.semsors (air/water) rev-counter innerds and part of the fuel pressure regulator...

It all depends, how deep are your pockets?do you want to plug and go or plug and play?I have http://www.msextra.com/forums/index.php on mine...one hell of a steep learning curve for a pensioner but great satisfaction,am now at 40mpg with correct mixtures at all rev ranges and throttle openings,,,,but the best "bang for buck" was starting off....just using the ignition side of it....much smoother....no chains flapping around , no weights bobbing in and out and rotor arms flailing around...

One of the reasosn I like old cars is that they do not have ECUs.
I like the idea that if the car doesn't work it is either fuelling or spark.
If it is spark it is distributor/coil/rotor or related thing.
When an ECU car fails, you need computers/scanners and stuff like that - which I am happy for a garage to do on my new car.
Bike carbs seem a happy compromise.

I intended to convert my car to FI but stopped half way as the cost of doing it properly is quite significant.
In the end I installed a custom built FI tank, by Andy Wiltshire, with integral swirl pot and ran hard wall flow and return lines through the chassis spine. Ultimately I fitted distributorless ignition which need a crank trigger and TPS on the carbs but left it there as the cost of throttle bodies and a good ECU and mapping session was still going to cost at least a further ?2k.
This way I have installed most of the 'hard to reach' infrastructure so I could go the full hog in future.
I think you will not have much change out of ?3k to do the job properly with Jenveys and an Emerald.
Still something which intrigues me and I may yet do it.

I think Jon has it,get the spark sorted and leave the fuel till you "win the pools" or have time to go the full hog..
Bike carbs if you wish...
