Air filter?

Is this really an Elan air filter?

I have the same one in a box of bits that came with the S3 but assumed it was for another car as it is not round and it is wrapped in celophane... does it unfold somehow, like a paper christmas decoration?

I have used something similar.
I remember when I took it out of the packet it did not instill much confidence
