fuel smell in trunk glass

Our 1965 S-2 Elan has had a fuel smell in the trunk since we acquired it some years ago. I know it had previously had a leak, long since repaired. So far I have been unable to purge the fumes from the glass. Does anyone know a successful method to clean the fiberglass of fuel remenants?

Two thoughts on this one, first I would use brake clean as it will not add any fumes to the mix and cleans about anything.
Second if you can't get it totally clean then brush a mix of resin over the area and seal it shut, yes I know that would add to the surface but it would solve the problem.
Good luck

Thanks for the ideas. Presently, I'm trying a solvent I have that converts petroleum to something akin to water. I've tried this before but I'm soaking the trunk area for several days this time.
Info: I suspected the tank so removed and pressurized. It held 100%. I then covered all the holes in the truck floor (ok, boot), and the filler hole then let sit all closed up overnight finding the same gas smell in the morning. Clearly impregnated in the glass.
