fuel pump fuel level ?

Hi,

What level should the fuel be in theglass bowl on the fuel pump?

I'm asking because I suspect a problem with my fuel pump.

I have removed the fuel line from the carbs to observe the fuel flow from the pump. Using the starter motor to spin the engine intially gives a good few squitrs of fuel then nothing. the level of the fuel sits below the gauze filter.

the level seems to build again after a while.

Any ideas?

Ok looks like I am now the resident fuel pump expert.

The level should be above the gauze filter as the fuel enters from the tank into the glass bowl, it is then drawn througth the gauze filter and pushed up to the carbs.

hence if the level does not reach the guaze filter then the fuel will not be sucked through.

The cause of my problem.. not enough fuel in the tank. I had a 5 litre can, put 2 litres in which I then siphoned out to clear the old fuel residue. Then put the remaining 3 litres from the can in the tank. By removing the fuel level sender you can see that 3 litres just reaches the top of the tank outlet which is raised from the bottom of the tank by about 5mm. I guess this stops a certain amount of sediment being drawn through the line.

Good news is that the tank is spotless shiny metal inside, I'm very surprised by this. Hopefully another 5 litres and reconnect everything and I'm good to go... well start the engine at least.

Yes sounds right as both my cars run with the level above the gauze ......well they do while idleing anyway:wink:
