Fuel spillage from filler

PostPost by: mbell » Mon Apr 27, 2020 6:13 pm

I have done the breather mod on my car already but not the MX-5 valve. I am not that keen on the MX-5 one, due to availability of the part, adding spacers and jubilee clamps on the outside. So I am looking at combining both mods into a single off the shelf filler neck...

I have a used filler neck and can use for parts to make mine but wondering if new parts are easily/cheaply available to save me cutting up my spare filler neck.

So wanting to know what other cars used the same filler cap/neck as the +2?

I just noticed Robinshaw & Ross calls up Jensen Healey as using the flip type fuel cap.

However, these pictures of Jensen Healey parts shows a bit different looking neck and rubber attachment. The Jensen Healey neck may work better for you?

This link has a better picture of what they claim to be the new Healey replacement part (cap and neck). A similar looking locking cap and neck appear on page 80 of the current Car Builders Solutions catalogue.

This link shows a similar cap used on British motorcycles, presumably without a filler neck.

Thanks Stu, the jenson part does look right but it's a bit pricey for my needs.

I also found the Norton one, with just the neck topper which is exactly what I want but it listed as 1 3/4" ID and the lotus one is 2 1/8" ID.

I've gone and ordered the bits and plan to use the old one I have here to convert mine. I was just hoping to find cheap new bits so other's could copy and fix two problems with one neck :)

Chaps, could someone clarify please, I want to do this mod and can find MX5 MK1 and MK2 filler necks on eBay. Which one do I need please? Is there a difference from the point of view of just wanting to scavenge the valve? Thanks.

As long as it has the non return valve it doesn't matter. I fitted mine in the neck of the tank, turned up an ally collar that the valve fitted into made the outside of the collar a snug fit in the tank pipe with a small flange same size as the outside of pipe.

Good day!

I am getting ready to perform the MX-5 check valve into my 1968 Elan+2.

I was wondering if you had a spare mounting ring for it? From what I've seen, your solution is the cleanest way to go. I really do not look forward to cutting up a MX-5 pipe and using reducers.

Thanks!

No sorry, I just made the one ring. I made it out of some ally, turned it to be a good fit in tank neck with a small flange to stop it going into tank, and made the mx5 pipe a good fit in the ring, I left the mx5 pipe slightly long so I could bend the tabs over to ensure it didn't drop into the tank.

Thank you for the quick reply! Looks like I will be sawing a MX-5 pipe after all!

Thanks for the list of places to obtain the valve.

I'm going to go to E-bay and look at the availability of the fuel filler pipe, just in case I have to go that route.

I got my mx5 filler pipe from an online breaker yard. £8.00 bargain.

Thread resurrection :D
I got my MX5 pipe for £10+pp.
Discussed options with my buddy with a lathe and left him with my MX5 valve and a rod of Nylon6 which is supposedly resistant to fuel and ethanol. He has machined up a very tidy collar to locate the valve in the filler neck. It looks as though it's supposed to be there :D
Time will tell if it works and if the collar turns to gloop.

That looks good
When I did the original install of the valve in my car I did consider putting it into the filler neck but rejected the idea because it would have been possible to hit the valve with the pump nozzle when filling the car.
The filler neck in the picture looks longer than the one in my car though.
