I saw this today.

An early S4 without Strombergs. A unicorn? It looks very good for the money.

I recall the Strombergs were initially supplied only for the Federal cars to meet the emerging emissions regulations that started late 1968 - early '69. However, it's been 55+ years.... The number on the back of the head might tell the tale, if there is one.

Yes, the Series 4 was fitted with both Weber and Stromberg carbs, depending on which engine type was fitted, as below:
C SE Weber, domestic & export Elan Sep 68 to Jan 71
D Standard Weber, domestic & export Elan Mar 68 to Dec 70
G Stromberg Federal Elan Jun 68 to Feb 72
H Super SE Weber, domestic Elan Oct 68 to Oct 70 (very rare)
K Standard Stromberg, domestic Elan Dec 68 - Mar 71
L SE Stromberg, domestic Elan Jan 69 - Mar 71

Hi Tim
The list you posted implies a signficant period of a couple of years when both Stromberg and Weber domestic UK cars were being produced. Was this actually the case ? I thought during 69 and 70 all Elans, domsetic and export and federal were Stromberg
cheers

It was indeed the case. I have made a study of the records to confirm this.

That car has been for sale for a few months now, , I would have thought it would have sold very quickly if it had been a good 'un.

Mine too: a 68 S4DHC and a 69FHC. Both had Webers and a bulge in the bonnet. That well-known mine of disinformation Graham Arnold wrote ages ago in his "Club" magazine that Chapman got ahead of himself and ordered the production of way too many bonnets with bulges, so these had to be used up on Weber cars.
Cheers,
Pete.
