Fuel Pump Paper Gasket installation Q.

PostPost by: pcarew » Mon Nov 25, 2024 8:51 pm

A quick polling of everyone here.
When installing the Mech. fuel pump to the block there is a paper gasket.

What are the opinions of how to install the paper gasket?
1) dry
2) slight covering of engine oil
3) Some form of gasket sealant
4) soak the gasket in water before installing

Opinions on the general web for paper gaskets seem to be all over the map.

For those that have replaced/installed the fuel pump, what was your procedure and any resultant leaking?

Paul.

I don't use any paper gasket Paul. The spacer block has some sort of paper gasket attached to both sides of it and I just coat each side with a thin film of Wellseal, Aviation Gasket 3 same stuff, let it go off for 15 minutes and then bolt it up. Make sure the lever of the pump is on top of the lobe of the cam. Never had a leak.

Thanks for the reply Leslie,
I completely cleaned the surface of the spacer block as the old gasket was a mess. I didn't remove the spacer as it seems well attached to the block.

So now I have a clean Fuel Pump surface and a clean Engine block spacer surface. The fuel pump refurb kit came with a paper gasket.

Would you discard the paper gasket in favour of the wellseal etc?

That spacer / heat isolator block is not meant to be re used once it has been on the engine, hence why there is a new one in a full gasket kit. They take a set once fitted and you are asking for trouble if you reuse. That isn't to say that some folk will, and have re used one. And that is why you only get one paper gasket with a pump rebuild kit, because that is for a different application, otherwise there would be two paper gaskets in a set. You need to buy another spacer block Paul, or risk the old one leaking.

Hello Leslie,
Thanks for your advise. I'm looking now for a replacement spacer block.

They don't seem very available in the US from what I've seen so far.

Cheers
Paul.

You can think outside the box here.
3D printed spacer, or machined out. A nitrol gasket on either mating surface.
The stock one is 1cm compressed paper I believe

?
I know not
