engine mounts stromberg/weber

PostPost by: whaig » Sat Apr 27, 2024 8:53 am

I have been reading about the engine mounts for my S4 Elan with Strombergs, and the information is fairly consistent regarding which type of mount should be used. This is my understanding:

• Stromberg: Engine mounts for both sides are the same; the engine sits level.
• Weber: Engine mounts are different; the carb side sits higher.

Why is there a difference? I have two S4 Elans; one has the wrong engine mount (don’t ask). I cannot get my hand under the (let’s call them) ‘Stromberg’ mounts, but I can get my hand under the ‘Weber’ mounts.

Is the reason that if you use the ‘Weber’ mount, the Stromberg would hit the bonnet?

Are there any other reasons, such as safety?

The Webers hit the footwell of an Elan under acceleration if the higher inlet mount is not used. The Strombergs do not have this problem as they have less projection under them at the footwell but are taller on top hence can use the same lower mount on both sides to minmise the size of the bonnent bulge required for top clearance

Thanks for the response. Basically down to the stromberg may foul the bonnet bulge. Think mines is ok so may leave as is.
