after a bit of hesitation [the car, not me] I had a look at the idle jets, and noticed that the nozzle ends were stained a silvery colour....almost like they had been 'tinned'....is this unusual? what causes it?
[I am replacing all of them as a couple seemed a bit restricted]

Fred,
Soldered and re-drilled seems likely. Be careful with replacements, as the size of your existing jets is probably different to the number stamped on them.
