New Airbox Backplate, But Slot for Throttle Cable too Large

PostPost by: Stevie-Heathie » Thu May 26, 2016 9:32 am

Any recommendations for fettling the hole where the throttle cable ferrule is supposed to "hook" into the bracket on the backplate?

The ferrule is fractionally too small for the hole so it just pulls through the bracket.

My idea is to cut a slot into a small washer with the right size hole in it, then epoxy that to the underside of the existing hole to reduce the aperture size.

Other options might be to bend / kink the bracket somehow, or to add some heft to the throttle cable ferrule (drop of solder maybe).

What have others done?

Thanks

How about using a bicycle ferrule (that has a grubscrew ti fasten it to the cable) on the end of the cable, cut a slot in it if necessary so that it is simmilar to the cup type ferrule on the upper part of the carb throttle mechanism.

check out flanderscables.com

They have just about anything you need for building throttle cables, or vintage motorcycle brake and clutch cables.

When you say new Backplate? do you mean a reproduction or a second hand one? if it's a reproduction can't you just buy the matching Throttle cable?

Failing that can't you just cut a new hole and slot next to the one thats too big?

When my cable pulled through the hole in the back plate after 30 years of wear, I just slotted a small washer and soldered it onto the end of the cable above the ferrule. it been that way for last 10 years without further problem.

cheers

Thanks all,

It's a new repro backplate from paul Matty. I've fitted it now, so to avoid hassle of taking off the trumpets etc to get the backplate off to fettle it I'll go with Rohan's solution of fettling the ferrule on the cable by slotting and soldering a small washer on there.

I do love this forum! Thanks as ever chaps.

Steve.
