Elan S4 throttle return spring

I've just replaced the accelerator cable on my Stromberg S4 Elan. There is no throttle return spring fitted (other that those fitted on the carburetters). Consequently the accelerator seems rather 'weak'.
Would anyone know whether any throttle return springs were fitted (either on the pedal or the carb linkage)? I've looked at previous posts on this topic and there seems to be nothing definitive. Pictures would be particularly helpful! Thoughts appreciated.

On Webers & Dellortos there should be a throttle return spring.

But yours is a Stromberg...

There should be a simple tension coil spring, from the inner cable connector to the air box. It's shown clearly in the workshop manual.

Yes, there is a tiny whole at the bottom of the airbox between the two carbs.

I'm afraid there's no hole in my airbox and I'm reluctant to drill it. An alternative is to run the spring from the carb balance pipe - anyone done this? Not sure what fitting I can use though. The linkage on my carbs has a lever on the top to which I can attach a spring.
