Glass Tank Filter

I was thinking about whether it would be worthwhile fitting one of those inline glass fuel filters where the small length of rubber pipe connects the tank outlet to the black nylon fuel pipe. This would obviously have to be extended by creating a downward loop rubber pipe extension. I would add that I have an alloy tank, so I wont ever suffer from rust particles in the fuel but it would be added protection for crud entering the fuel pump. Has anyone done this mod or is it overkill??

I've put a glass filter in line between tank and facet fuel filter in the boot of my +2 nice and clear to see any debris.
I now wish I'd put a tap in line before the filter so that when you clean it, you don't have to empty the tank :roll:

i have fitted a glass cleanable filter next to the tank in the boot of my Elan Sprint and also a bulb hand primer to fill carbs.

Here's the set up in the boot of my Sprint. On the right is the alloy tank from Spyder. The pipe goes from there to a solenoid valve (the blue thing) that is only held open by a 12volt supply, so without the ignition being on the fuel supply is cut off. The valve has a manual tap to open it should you need to.

The fuel then passes through a clear filter and then to the Webcon pump which has its own inlet filter as well. From the pump the fuel passes to the PTFE pipe through the chassis to the bonnet.

The black item almost behind the tank is a special relay from VW that only sends power to the pump if it receives a regular 12volt pulse. This is connected to the ignition low tension at the coil, so that if the engine stops (say in a collision) the relay will shut off the pump so fuel can't be squirted from a broken fuel line. Beside the relay is a red push button which by-passes the relay so I can prime the float chambers if necessary.

Overkill? Possibly, but better safe than sorry.

No offense, but there is no way I would put that much electrical circuitry in a closed environment with a fuel tank. And you have eleven possible locations that could leak all around this. I put an electric fuel pump in my S1 near the fuel tank and I was worried about that.

I'm not trying to be critical, but want you to be safe. you might want to reconsider the layout and design.
