Carb Air Intake unit questions

PostPost by: PC777 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 4:41 am

Hi all, I am in the process of tidying up various bits on the Elan (1967 S3 S/E) and had a few questions about the Air Intake for the Carburetors, I hope people don't mind me asking.

1. What colour were they originally?

The one I have taken out is black but after stripping off some paint it appears that it might have been a silver colour originally.

2. How was it mounted in the nose originally?

Image

Thanks

Paul

I believe the air filter housing was originally black as was the engine compartment to conform with the regulations that required the number plate letters to have a black background.
Here is a thread that should give you an idea how the filter housing was mounted.

Maybe its your picture but the housing does not look quite correct somehow ??? have the two intake tubes been shortened?

There was a flimsy sheet metal L shaped bracket that held the air filter. 2 small bolts held the air filter to the bracket. The hole was on the bottom. Sorry but I don't have a good picture. One good picture would tell all.

Hey guys this is a good help, I have a much better understanding now. And YES it does appear that the previous owner has cut the intakes short...Not happy about that.

OK thanks again.

Hi Paul,
Not sure it may fit but Kelvedon motors in Spalding appear to have an air filter housing bracket fabricated out of aluminium for sale. It's in the cooling section. If you're interested I have a spare filter housing with uncut trumpets.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete, thanks for the info, I just had a look and it appears to be a special racing one (bit expensive for me too).

Having looked at the parts manual I think I might be able to fabricate one up that would look correct.

I would be interested in an uncut Filter housing, PM me if you like, keep in mind I am in Adelaide South Australia.

Thanks again Pete.

Pics of the mounting brackets can be seen on the S & J website with prices.

Hi Paul,

I'm painting the garage floor at the moment but once I've finished I'll dig one out. One is in the car and the other was an eBay impulse buy! I get a discount through FedEx so we shall see. As you know, it's more the bulk of it rather than the weight.

All the best,

Pete
