Routing of fuel line over rear diff / cross member

Hi everyone,
I am just at the point of replacing the fuel line in the chassis of my S4. The chassis is bare and the brake lines are in as is the diff and it's mountings. Being in the vehicle hydraulics business I plan to use stainless steel rigid pipe through the spine with flexible hoses at each end to connect to the fuel pump and tank respectively. At the rear it seems that there are two possible routes from the spine to the tank. The first is to pass under the diff support cross member above the diff casing. The second seems to be run over the top of the cross member between it and the body. I have looked for pictorial guidance in my various books and there are no clear illustrations of the route. The fuel line had been removed from my car before I got it, so I cannot copy the original route. That helps not a jot! Anybody got any suggestions as to which is the correct routing? A good picture perhaps? Thanks.

The original nylon fuel line runs through the chassis passing through holes in the upper RH corner of the front and rear bulkhead plates of the backbone section, it's clipped to the underside of the crossmember over the gearbox and midway along the backbone. At the rear it passes over the diff crossmember then through the front wall of the boot to line up with the pipe stub on the fuel tank.
