Air filter set up.... Some advice needed

PostPost by: meandmyplus2 » Tue May 07, 2013 3:36 pm

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and relatively new to classic car ownership. I bought my first, a 1969 plus 2s about a year and half ago. I absolutely love it!!!
I have no previous mechanical experience but am very willing to learn, so have had the car looked after by morland jones, London.
My air filter currently consists of four piper cross socks attached to webers with the back plate still in place. I will upload a pic.
I was talking to another plus 2 owner, who warned me that this could be dangerous due to the possibility of blow back from carbs soaking the foam in fuel.
What are your thoughts on this and a potential replacement?
I have seen an interesting set up on the Cliveboy site. I was hoping to have a go a fitting the replacement myself....

Hi. The original airbox is designed to keep fuel that's come out of the carbs inside the airbox and away from the distributor and coil. If it's leaking then there's a fire risk. If it's been replaced by an alternative solution the fire risk needs to be considered. I bought Cliveboy's K&N kit, and it fits onto the original air duct and sits down in the nose of the car. I doubt it performs better than the original air filter, but it sounds nice. An alternative is two K&Ns right behind the carbs. I think the backplate needs to be modded for this. There are a number of posts on the forum with pics I believe.

Sean.

K&N after the carbs are good on my caterham cause they stick out of the bonnet to suck cold air
In an elan you will suck hot air

Keeping the air box and ducking fresh air in the nose is luch better whatever kind of filtrr set up you re using in the end...original giltrr housing with paper, with kn or directly a kn with no air box.
