DHLA Top Cover

PostPost by: RogerFrench » Thu Feb 14, 2013 3:26 pm

My S3 has Dell'Orto DHLA 40 carbs, and yesterday I set about cleaning them and renewing gaskets, o-rings, etc.
In both carbs the split posts that hold the float pivot pin have one leg broken off, though the pins and floats appear to stay in situ OK. Searching the internet finds a number of hits from Alfa owners and others, all with the same problem.
I've tried searching here but without luck. Is this a common problem with Elans, too? IS there a salvage scheme?

At any rate, I've ordered 2 new top covers from Eurocarb in Reading. They're not cheap, but a lot cheaper than they can be found in the US, it seems.

Roger,

I had the same problem with a Weber carb. The tab was broken off at the hole for the float pin and I lost the piece that broke off. A welding shop was able to build up the metal and leave a hole for the pin. I think the welder put a brass pin in place and added new metal without getting the pin welded in place.

I can provide a photo later today.

Here is a picture of my repaired Weber. I think the welder said he TIG welded it, but I could be wrong. The cost was $10, so I don't think he spent much time on it. I had to do some filing on the repaired area to get the float arm to fit.

New top covers have just arrived - they do not have a split post. I guess that's a real improvement.
