Weber floats

I have just been in the garage, I am overhauling two 40DCOE 31 Webers. Noticed that one set of floats has liquid in both drums. This is spooky. They are in good condition and no matter how hard I shake they are bone dry and wont leak. It is as if some one put it there. What is this all about? How did it get in there and why is it not leaking. These have been on a shelf for about 5 years (dry)!

My understanding is that floats should be totally empty. Could it be a balance ballast for specified buoyancy or have I lost the plot?

If these are the brass floats that are soldered together (two halfs?) try holding them under hot water and see if bubbles come out of the seam, it is possible to drill a small hole to get the petrol out and resolder but it can effect the weight. Oh and yes there should be no fluid in there.

They are as you describe. I will try the hot water and then drill in to see how thick the liquid is that comes out. If it will flush and dry I will try and repair.
