Fuel lift pump with hand primer

Am I dreaming or did the earlier cars have a lift pump with a hand primer.

If they did, does anybody know the part number. If they did not, does anybody know if an other pump would fit with a hand primer.

Just thinking it may be easier than all that cranking when you have not been out for 3 weeks or so!

Dont really want to fit an electric!

Never seen one on an Elan but would there be room to operate the lever being so close to the body?

My old Dexta tractor has one, but I've never seen one on a car! If it's on webers, just unscrew the butterfly nuts on the top covers and pour a little petrol straight into the carb. Two prods on the throttle and she'll start up instantly, all other things working of course.

Mike,

FYI, my very first car, a '64 Triumph TR-4 came from the factory with one. Plenty of room to reach down there and grab it though. Hope this starts you in the right direction of finding one.

I will have look at the room. Saw some with wire ring and small pull device on the handle so it can be pulled from above (on other old pumps).

I am not on webers. On strombergs.

The priming lever is most common on diesels, where it's needed to clear air-locks. I'd be delighted if i never see one again! If you are diverging from standard, consider fitting an electric pump and pressure regulator. Not only is startng improved, but idle becomes more even, and I am pretty sure, so is power on wide open throttle. The existing pump was designed to provide fuel to the 105E anglia, and people tell me is barely up the the job on a twincam.

These were quite common fitment on triumph and MGs in the past

:D Supermarine Spitfires had them - so can't be too bad!
(a lever on right hand cockpit side which had to be operated for some 30 seconds...)

I have seen some of the pumps that fit on the MGs and Triumphs.

Perhaps I may look at electric. Have heard some funny stories about not getting the pressure regulator right.

Re: mech pump marginal rating. Surely most twin cams must still have these fitted!
