Sprint Back Box

PostPost by: mark030358 » Thu Sep 19, 2024 11:07 pm

Hi folks,
I’d like a mild steel back box any ideas where to source one? Kelvedon ones out of stock.

I have tried a TTR fast road box (too noisy for me and now for sale) and I have a really old stainless one fitted which sounds awful.

If I “have” to buy stainless do we have at least a nice sounding one?

Cheers

Add resonator, or long narrow muffler as 2nd?

Mark, I looked into this last year, since I wanted the mild steel (MS) sound (keeping it original!) as it is better than the SS sound.

Most classic exhaust fabricators work only in SS these days, it seems. However, I did find one that said they would work in MS. They are: https://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/classic-vi ... r-exhausts

I wrote to them with photos of my existing Sprint set-up and received this reply: "We can make a mild Steel silencer, just to note the end of our silencers don’t have rolled edges like that. Price would be around £190 + vat, I would need the old one to copy it."

I stopped my research there so would be interested if anyone else has any suggestions.

-morning gents and and fellow nerds

You may find that " MANIFLOW " is very helpfull. Their main line being BL in mild steel.
they did one to order after a positive discussion of my needs .
In the end they did a slightly modified Langford type .( this beeing sort of glasspack / straight- through with an additional resonance chamber at the inlet . Worked a treat for 30 years )
The noise is a little less obtrusive than the very common SS edition. - and far better than a claimed ss copy from a well known guru. ( I have during the last 50 years never seen so tiny dimensions and endured so much noise !!.)
Maniflow still keep the jigs to make a copy of the orig lotus issue ( baffled ? ).However I dont know if this would be more descrete than my special.
Ordering to day I would order a copy of the std issue however in the the slightly larger + 2 cannister .
( there will be sufficient space for ca. 18 X 40 X 9 cm .
Reason : During my early lotus years one of the replacements bought from Lotus was exactly like that . And very nice soundwise.

Hi all,
How many people would take a back box for a Sprint in mild steel, made as close as possible to the original spec?

No idea on price or even if I can get them made yet, so this is just a feeler.

cheers
