MIN and MAX marks on Dipstick

PostPost by: david.g.chapman » Fri Sep 06, 2024 3:50 pm

Just a quick question - can someone tell me the oil capacity difference between the MIN and MAX marks on a twin cam dipstick. I have a dipstick with the marks about 20mm apart....

Just realised the marks are labelled FULL and FILL!

Richard (ricarbo) measured this a while ago at 950cc .....

Quantity to fill to bottom of dipstick 1700cc a height from bottom of sump of 40mm.
Quantity to fill to fill mark of dipstick 2650cc a height from bottom of sump of 62mm.
Quantity to fill to full mark of dipstick 3600cc a height from bottom of sump of 82mm.

Paul Matty once told me never believe the marks on the dipstick. Drain the oil and leave it a couple of hours to fully drain down (engine warm obviously) the fill and replace filter and top up with specified amount of oil from workshop manual. Once done check dipstick. He was right mine was a full 5mm above the Full mark on the dipstick!!

I did the same, and mine was also well above the full mark, probably more than 5mm. I put a knotch in the dipstick at the "actiual" full mark based on the oil added.

On the Cortina’s at least different profile (ie capacity sumps) were used throughout the years. The capacity listed in the workshop manual may therefore not be correct. Assuming the same dipstick was used across the years and the correct part number dipstick is being used if it were me personally I’d ignore the capacity in the workshop manual and go by the dipstick.

The dipstick makings at the full mark sets the minimum distance between the top of where the oil sits in the sump and the crankshaft webs. This is what is important so you don’t have the crankshaft webs contacting the oil whilst it is rotating when the sump is full. The maximum oil capacity stated in the manual therefore becomes irrelevant
